UP IN SMOKE

About 80 round modules of cotton went up in smoke last weekend as wind fanned flames down a closely-spaced row of the modules along a field just a few miles northwest of Lamesa. “All of them were already on fire when we got there,” said Lamesa Fire Chief Larry Duyck. “There’s no way we could put all of them out, even if we had a fire hy-drant right there.” Firefighters worked with others to save another 60 or so round modules in the same location. With the dry weather, Duyck said, the department has responded to more cotton-related fires – including several cotton strippers – than he can recall in recent years. LFD photo
