When Sue Winford began working for the Lamesa National Bank on April 19, 1971, she was 21 years old, Richard Nixon was president, a first-class postage stamp cost six-cents and bell bottom jeans were in vogue.
A lot has changed in 50 years. When she began working in the bank as a bookkeeper, many of the jobs were done by hand. Workers had to alphabetize customers’ checks before inspecting them to see if the proper signatures matched each customers’ handwriting.
“We’ve gone to computers,” Winford said. “In some ways, it’s been good, in some ways it’s not. Things are a lot faster.”
