A screening of potential applicants for correctional officer will be offered next weekend at the Smith Unit in Lamesa by a TDCJ (Texas Department of Criminal Justice) recruiter. Pre-employment testing and interviews for those applicants will get underway at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4. The starting salary for a correctional officer is $36,000. In addition, full-time correctional officers who are hired and accept assignment at select units, including the Smith Unit, are eligible for a $5,000 recruiting bonus.
