SNYDER – The Snyder Police Department (SPD) is warning Scurry County dog owners to be aware that there has been an outbreak of canine distemper in the past month. As of last Thursday, there had been more than 25 positive cases of canine distemper within the county. Canine distemper is a highly contagious airborne virus spread by contact with an infected animal or placenta. It has a high mortality rate and surviving animals usually have irreparable nervous system damage. There is no cure for canine distemper, but it is preventable through vaccinations.
