The federal holiday honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is slated next Monday, Jan. 21, with several local businesses and offices planning to be closed.
King was the chief spokesman for non-violent demonstrations during the civil rights movement. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, which takes place on the third Monday in January each year. MLK Day was not observed until 1986 and officially was observed by all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
King’s actual birthday was Jan. 15.
