Possession of prohibited items – cell phones, weapons and drugs – in the Smith Unit state prison here means a number of inmates will be serving extra years behind bars. Sixteen inmates pleaded guilty to various charges over a two-day period in state district court here this past week, with Judge Cecil Puryear of Lubbock presiding by assignment. Each was sentenced to serve additional time in prison, with the new sentences not beginning until each inmate completes the sentence he currently is serving.
