It was a little chilly and late in the afternoon when George Tervants and Jimmy Guajardo were out on the courthouse lawn looking for pecans.The lawn’s four sides surrounding the courthouse building contains several pecan trees. Every year around this time is when the nuts they produce fall to the ground.Each fall and winter, residents go there to collect the free nuts.“They’re pretty expensive at the store; about $2 a pound,” Guajardo said.For Tervants, it was a rare day.
