A new oil drilling operation near Punkin Center is being planned by Smith Energy Operating Co. of Lubbock. The company recently received a permit from the Texas Railroad Commission to drill the No. 1 Cline 10 about 10 miles northwest of Lamesa. That location is about a mile east of Punkin Center. Planned as a directional vertical well, it is scheduled for a total depth of 12,500 feet.
