Although Dawson County’s drought index remains fairly low, the threat for wildfires is increasing as things start to dry out after a relatively wet winter, according to Lamesa Fire Chief Larry Duyck.
Giving a regular update to the Dawson County Commissioners Court meeting on Tuesday, Duyck said Dawson County is now listed at 217 on the Keeth-Byram Drought Index.
That is an increase of 32 points in the past two weeks but is still near the bottom quarter of the scale, which goes from 0 to 800.
“You can see we’ve started the drying-out process,” Duyck said of the recent increase.
