Awareness and prompt action by a school teacher and others led to the recent discovery of a pair of handguns in the backpacks brought to school by two young students at Lamesa’s South Elementary campus, according to Lamesa Police Chief Josh Peterson. Although noting that an investigation continues into the June 2 incident, Peterson said this past Wednesday that neither he nor his officers believe the students had any malicious intent in bringing the guns to school.
