It seems that too much time has gone by that nobody really knows the answer to the question: How did Lamesa High School get a tornado as its mascot?
It’s not like Dawson County is notorious for tornadoes. There’s sandstorms and dust devils but only an occasional tornado.
It seems the LHS mascot has been the Golden Tornado for about as long as there’s been a school in Lamesa.
Even longtime teachers and residents don’t know the answer.
“I don’t know. It’s been that way ever since I remember. Everybody that I could ask that I know, unfortunately are gone,” said resident Carter Schildknecht.
