A spray plane skims just a few feet above the ground to apply chemicals - likely fertilizer - to a field west of Lamesa on Friday morning. Taking advantage of varying amounts of rainfall received at the end of April - from close to 3 inches in the southern part of the county to about 1 inches in other areas - farmers are busy preparing their fields for planting but are still hoping for additional rainfall. Some planting already is beginning in irrigated fields and other locations were sufficient moisture allows.
