President’s Day is celebrated the third Monday in February. The holiday started in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22.
In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was signed into action and the February holiday was renamed President’s Day and moved to its current annual three-day weekend.
Three other Presidents join Washington with February birthdays – Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Harrison and Ronald Reagan – though the holiday never lands on any of their actual birth dates.
President’s Day currently honors all former presidents.
