It wasn’t the normal vehicle fire that Lamesa firefighters pulled up to Wednesday night near Patricia.
In addition to facing a pickup fully engulfed in flames, firefighters were greeted by the sound of hundreds of rounds of ammunition exploding.
The vehicle in flames was a Winkler County Sheriff’s Department Unit from Kermit, according to Lamesa Fire Chief Larry Duyck.
“They got their guns out but there was extra ammunition in a secure metal box in the back of the pickup,” Duyck said.
“They probably had about 1,000 rounds of ammo.”
