The Sands school system at Ackerly does things a little differently than most schools celebrating homecoming.
Every four years, Sands celebrations are true homecomings with a bonfire, the return of former students, and a welcome-back banquet in the auditorium.
“To put it into Lamesa terms, it’s a Jubilee. It’s like an all-school reunion,” said Tana Howard, Sands school counselor.
But the three years inbetween homecomings, the annual event is toned down and becomes a “round-up.”
“It’s kind of unique down here,” said Superintendent Wayne Henderson. “We have a homecoming every four years and a round-up every year and this is one of the round-ups.”
