When I was growing up in the tiny town of Lexington, SC all able-bodied citizens of relative youth belonged to the Volunteer Fire Department. To be fair, our service was a bit nobler than it was fruitful. We generally considered it a successful call when we could salvage a good foundation on which the former homeowner could rebuild.
