Rolling to a 62-0 six-man football victory Friday night at Wellman-Union, the O’Donnell Eagles guaranteed themselves a third playoff appearance in the past four years.
Going into Friday’s game at Gail, the Rankin Red Devils were 45-point favorites.
The Golden Tors lost Thursday’s combined JV/ freshmen football game to the Denver City Mustangs, 26-0, at Golden Tornado Stadium.

After enjoying one of their best fall tennis seasons in Lamesa High School history, the Golden Tornadoes are well-represented on the all-District 4-4A Tennis Team selected Thursday. After reaching the Class 4A state playoffs, the Golden Tornadoes won a tennis playoff match for what’s thought to be the first time in 30 years. Golden Tor senior Karmello Reyes made first-team all-district at number one boys singles after going 7-1 against District 4-4A’s topseeded boys. “The only match ‘Mello lost all fall was to Shallowater, and ‘Mello was feeling sick that day,” Coach Jose Lucio said. Reyes has been a regional qualifier in boys singles the past two seasons. Lucio believes Reyes will be playing college tennis after this season’s over. “’Mello lives and breathes tennis. He’s got a good, hard serve, probably in the 105 to 110 (miles per hour) range, and he’s got a great forehand which helps him put the ball in the most difficult spots,” Lucio said. Reyes and partner Victor Murillo earned second-team all-district in boys doubles after going 5-2 against 4-4A’s top boys doubles’ teams. “These two guys might be the strongest boys doubles team in our district next spring,” Lucio said.
While his older brother Kobe Martinez played for the Golden Tornadoes for two seasons before graduating last May, it looks like Isaiah Martinez Jr. could be an exciting player to watch in the future.
This year has seen a nice turn-around in the Golden Tornadoes volleyball program.
No strangers when it to comes to the UIL State Cross Country meet, the Sands Mustangs are heading back to state after a strong showing at Tuesday’s Region I-IA Championships at Lubbock’s Mae Simmons Park.
With only two weeks left, it has gotten crowed at the top in the race for the $200 grand prize to be awarded to the season-long winner of the Lamesa Press-Reporter’s annual football contest.
