Samuel Vernon Kidd
Samuel Vernon Kidd passed peacefully away on Monday morning, January 21, 2019 at the age of 96 years.
He was one of eight children born to Susie and Alfred McCager Kidd on September 3, 1922 in Lamesa, Texas where the Kidd family farmed.
Samuel Vernon served in the United States Army Air Forces from September 1942 through February 1946 during World War II. He was so thrilled to participate in the Texas South Plains Honor Flight in October of 2018 with his son, Wayland.
He met his “ honey,” Faye Evelyn McCulloch of Alcoa, Tennessee, during his time of service through a last-minute mistake being sent to Tennessee from Illinois. Recognizing his military identification number did not match the numbers called, he was told to get on the bus anyway because there was no time to resolve the error. He and Faye married in Alcoa, Tennessee on August 11, 1946, moved to Lamesa Texas, and celebrated more than 72 years of marriage. They continued to claim each other as “my honey” through the last days.
Mr. Kidd managed the parts department for Bob Brown Oldsmobile and Cadillac until he retired in 1985.
He was loved so much by his family for his consistent calm, patience, and kindness. His positive attitude spoke to them in the ways he responded and treated other people. His kindness and ever-present smile endeared him to all that knew him.
He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lamesa since 1947 where he taught nine-year-old boys, Sunday night children’s class, was a deacon, and was always in attendance in his adult men’s Sunday School class.
Samuel Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and all seven of his siblings.
He is survived by his wife, Faye; two children, Wayland Kidd and wife, Dagmar, of Spring, Texas and Nancy Baggett and husband, Kelly, of Lubbock, Texas. Vernon was Granddad to three grandchildren, Aaron Baggett and wife, Lisa, of Belton, Texas, Abby Hulin and husband Josh, of Odessa, Texas, and Adriene Simpson and husband, Bryan, of Lubbock, Texas. He also loved five great- grands, Rhett and Keller Baggett, Sawyer and Norah Hulin, and Logan Simpson.
Samuel Vernon Kidd’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, January 24, 2019, at 1:30 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Lamesa, Texas.
He will be interred in the Houston National Cemetery for veterans at a later date.
