Oma Dee Phillips
Funeral services for Oma Dee Northcott Phillips will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Branon Funeral Home.
Oma Dee was born October 28th, 1918, in Reden, Oklahoma, to Richard Odis and Georgia Oma Shahan Northcott. At the time of her death she was 104 years old.
When Oma Dee started to school she skipped to the third grade because she had been reading her older brother’s books that he brought home from school and she could read. When she graduated from the 8th grade she tied with another girl to graduate as Valedictorian of her class, but she let the other girl have the honor. She didn’t think she had a nice enough dress and she was a little shy speaking in front of people.
Oma Dee graduated from Lamesa High School in 1936. During her high school years, she was a member of the Pep Squad and she made extra money working in the library.
Oma Dee married William Duron “Cotton” Phillips in 1936 in the First Baptist Church parsonage with Bro. Cole, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Her husband preceded her in death in January, 2005.
Oma Dee accepted Christ as her Savior on an Easter Sunday and was baptized shortly after. At the time of her death she was the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church in Lamesa.
On her 100th birthday all the members that were in attendance stood at the front of the church and sang “Happy Birthday to her. She was watching the service on television. Faith in God was very important to her and she was definitely a prayer warrior for her family.
Oma Dee had a great sense of humor and a very sharp wit. She kept her mind sharp by reading anything put in front of her. She kept her library card current at 103 years old because of her love for reading. Her eyes became dim and she could no longer read as she once could. She was interested in genealogy and has had several books published, leaving quite a legacy for her family.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was an accomplished real estate broker. She served as President of the Dawson County Garden Club. She served on the Dawson County Museum Board. She also served as treasurer of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary at the Medical Arts Hospital. She was very involved in school activities when her children were in school, serving as President of the PTA. She was on the committee that brought the “rain maker” to Lamesa; she was working at the Lamesa Daily Reporter at the time and she covered it for the paper. Her chocolate pies and cakes have won many blue ribbons at the cony fairs. She worked for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal in the 60’s when she and her husband were living in Lubbock. She received the Woman of Achievement by the Miss Texas Organization in 2014.
She is survived by a son, Dennis, along with his wife, Diane Phillips of Wake Forest, North Carolina. A daughter, Duronell, and husband Charles Warren of Lamesa.
She is also survived by two grandchildren: Kelli and husband, Mark Matlock of Lamesa, Texas, Jon, and wife Meggan Warren of Portland, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. D. Phillips, and two grandsons, Jody Phil Warren of Lamesa and Buck Phillips of Denver, Colorado. Great Granddaughter, Sandi Leigh Warren, preceded her in death in November 2005.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by nine great- grandchildren and 10 great- great grandchildren.
