James Howell
Graveside service for James Howell, 88, of Odessa will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Dawson County Cemetery with Lynn Money officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Branon Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at Branon Funeral Home.
James passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021 in Midland, Texas.
He was born February 23, 1933 in Lamesa, Texas to James Watson and Lois (Futrell) Howell. James served in the Air Force during the Korean War. After leaving the Air Force, he attended University of Texas Southwestern Medical School on the Navy Submarine Medical Program, serving in the submarine service and Navy Medical Corps. He served as the commanding officer for the Navy Laboratory Corps School and was the executive officer of Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego. James is a veteran of the Korean War, Vietnam War, Granada Conflict and the Panama Conflict. James retired from the United States Navy. He moved to Snyder, Texas to work as a pathologist at Cogdell Memorial. He later moved to Odessa and headed up the pathology department at Odessa Regional Medical Center. Retiring from medicine, at the ripe old age of nearly 80 years.
James was a godly man. He loved teaching Bible class and even preached an occasional sermon. He had a heart for world missions and Christian education. James served as an elder for three congregations, North Charleston Church of Christ in Charleston, South Carolina, Clairemont Church of Christ in San Diego, California and Sherwood Church of Christ in Odessa, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothea Forehand Hix Howell of Odessa; children, Debbie Wheeler and husband Paul of Lubbock, James Van Howell and wife Ronelle of Lubbock, and Nancy Crow and husband Ken of Abilene; step-children, Larry Hix of Carrollton, Terry Hix and wife Becky of College Station, Gary Hix and wife Vickie of Lubbock and Jerry Hix and wife Lynn of Odessa; six grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and his brother, Jerry Howell of Arlington.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Audrey Faye Sellers Howell, and his sister, Linda French.
