It’s the beginning of summer, temperatures are rising and it’s no surprise that the chances of grassland fires are on the increase.Fire Chief Larry Duyck presented Dawson County commissioners with the numbers Tuesday on the county’s Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) rating.Fire and county officials pay attention to the KBDI numbers while determining whether to install burn bans outlawing outdoor burning. Those ratings are based upon an area’s dry vegetation and moisture levels.The county’s rating has gone up 65-points over the past two weeks. Two weeks prior, the rating was 343.
