When Ben Nix, 18, graduates from Borden County High School in May, he’ll leave school as a champion winner. And it’s all thanks to Donnie, a 1,210 pound Brangus steer he had been raising for about a year.Donnie captured the champion lightweight prize in the Brangus division and a $15,000 bid at auction in the annual Houston Livestock Show March 12. It’s the most Nix has ever netted with one of his show animals making it to auction in county or major shows.“I’ve been showing since third grade. I use to be in 4-H and now I’m in FFA,” Nix said.
