Avery Doss

    Avery Doss was born in Hugo, OK, on May 12, 1937 to Carnie Andrew Doss and Oma Lee Mansell Doss, and passed away January 22, 2024, after a lengthy illness. 
    Although born in Oklahoma, he got to O’Donnell, TX as fast as he could. He attended O’Donnell schools until graduation, and continued his education at Hardin Simmons University, where he was active in the Cowboy Band. 
    Avery married Patsy Pearce in 1958 and soon after they moved to Lamesa, where they were involved in the insurance, credit bureau, and tax businesses. They were active in tennis, baseball, softball, band and were great Golden Tornado Supporters.
    Avery was first and foremost and avid collector. He hunted and collected arrowheads as a boy, which continued his entire life and instilled a love of Indian artifacts and history to his children and grandchildren. 
    Other interests included collecting all kinds of antiques and all sports in which his children and grandchildren were involved.
    Avery and Patsy had two children: Jerry A. Doss, Jr. and Terri Doss Weatherford. 
    Following the death of his wife of 36 years, Avery and Jan Napper married in 1995, joining their two families. In his second chapter of life, he claimed her three children: Lisa Napper, James Napper, and Joel Napper, and was loved by them.
    Avery is survived by his wife Jan, five children, eight wonderful grandchildren and five amazing great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his close friend and colleague, whom he considered a daughter, Martha Hernandez.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patsy, and infant daughter Dana, his brother and sister-in-law Roger and Roddy Doss.
    Services for Avery will be held on Friday, Jan. 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, where he was a member for many years. A luncheon-reception will follow at the Fellowship Hall. Arrangements are under the care of Branon Funeral Home.
