Twenty-three Sands High School students placed sixth at state during a University Interscholastic League (UIL) One-Act Play competition Thursday in Austin.Fourteen cast members, six crew members and three alternates put on the 1992 Pulitzer Prize winning play, “Fire in the Hole,” at the Austin Independent School District Performing Arts Center in Austin.The play depicts a family’s struggles in 1920’s rural Appalachia against a destructive coal mining industry.The play is among eight other plays as part of playwright Robert Schenkkan’s “The Kentucky Cycle.”“It (The Kentucky Cycle) correlates a family for over 200 years,” said Tana Howard, Sands school district counselor and ...
