Wednesday’s announcement that Dawson County has been declared a disaster area as a result of the severe storm here on June 26 wasn’t exactly what local officials were hoping for.
But it is at least a measure of assistance.
Instead of providing any direct financial aid to those impacted by the storm, the disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) makes low-interest federal loans available.
“We did not get any FEMA help,” County Judge Foy O’Brien said.
Local officials had hoped for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declaration which could have opened up some direct financial assistance to local residents,
