Wind speed estimated at 110-120 mph
When a supercell thunderstorm collides with 88 mile-per-hour winds from another weather system, things get scary.
That’s what Lamesa residents experienced Saturday evening, according to an official with the National Weather Service.
The result was damaging straight-line winds now estimated at 110-120 miles per hour combined with rainfall measured at almost a quarter-inch per minute.
Throw in some hail and add the resulting flooding, and it spells disaster.
County Judge Foy O’Brien took action Monday to make it official, issuing a local disaster declaration for Dawson County and appealing to Texas Governor Greg Abbott for assistance.
