A heat lamp is believed to be the cause of a fire which destroyed a barn and a nearby tractor located behind a residence just west of Lamesa on Sunday evening.
“They were brooding chickens and they had a heat lamp over the chickens. Their heat lamp apparently set it (the barn) on fire,” said Levi Roberts, fire marshal.
The fire was reported at 6:25 p.m. at 907 W. Hwy. 180.
Roberts said the residents were not at home at the time, and the fire was reported by a passerby.
“It was burning awhile before someone called it in,” he said.
