There was plenty of smoke – and aroma – in the air on the west side of Lamesa High School on Saturday as 10 teams from five different schools competed in a regional barbecue competition. Lamesa High School’s Rollin’ Smoke team took first place in the ribs category. “A little nervous,” team member Yenisci Guevara said about the team’s win. “I didn’t think we were going to get first place.” Most schools had more than one team competing. Rankin had three, Frenship provided one, and Lamesa, Sands and O’Donnell each brought two teams to the contest. The teenage cooks began their work before sunrise ...
