Juan Gabriel Luera

    Juan Gabriel Luera, 42, of Slaton passed away Thursday, August 20, 2020. 
    He was born October 21, 1977 in Lamesa to Willie and San Juana Luera. Juan met his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Brenda Vargas, March 14,1995. They were inseparable from then on and they eventually married through the Catholic Church on May 2, 2009.
    In school he was the quarterback for the O’Donnell Eagles, and he held many honors through his school years. Coach Patridge was a big inspiration for him through school. 
    Juan was an original and loyal fan to the Kansas City Chiefs. He was given a Kansas City Chiefs jacket in 1985 by his dad that he always talked about. Juan was so excited when Kansas City won the Super Bowl and the win was sweeter since they beat his dad’s team! 
    Sports was his life, he played football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and softball. Juan was always there to help others especially those he respected. Juan also enjoyed playing Texas Hold-Em and disk golf. Juan coached many of his children’s sports teams as they grew up, coaching many children through the years. He was very involved in all his children’s sports and events. 
    Juan was a correctional officer at the TDCJ Monfort Unit for 22 years where he was loved by all his co-workers. He touched the lives of so many people and will be truly missed.
    He is survived by his wife Brenda Luera; daughters, Aurora of Brownwood, and Anelise of Slaton; son, Alberto of Slaton; mother, San Juana of O’Donnell; brothers, Nino (Nicole) of Lubbock and Valentin (Rosario) of O’Donnell; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his dad, Willie Luera; his grandparents, Albert and Aurora Luera and Jose Isabel and Isabel Flores.
    Visitation will start at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at the Venue on Broadway with Rosary at 6:00 p.m. Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2020 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at O’Donnell Cemetery. Masks will be required to attend.
