Charlene Hutchings Harris
Charlene Hutchings Harris, 83, of Lamesa passed away Sunday morning, June 14, 2020 at her home with family around her.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 19, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Baptist Church with Bruce Parsons of Roscoe, Texas officiating. Interment will follow at Dawson County Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Branon Funeral Home.
The service will also include a celebration of life for her husband, Huey Harris who passed away on February 2, 2020.
Charlene was born in Dekalb, Texas July 22, 1936 and she was the first born child of Charlie and Iris Hutchings. She attended elementary school in East Texas and after moving to Lamesa with her family, she attended Lamesa schools through the 11th grade.
Charlene married Huey Harris in September of 1953, and from 1953-1961 they lived in Dallas, El Paso, Artesia, N.M., Houston, and Grants Pass, Oregon and settled in Lamesa. They were married 66 years. Their greatest blessing was the birth of their only child in 1956, a daughter, Valena Harris.
Besides being a homemaker most of her married life, she sold Avon for many years and held jobs at different businesses in Lamesa, some of those being: Stephen’s Grocery in the meat department, Perry’s Variety Store, Photo Kwik and Anthony’s Department Store.
Charlene was a charter member of Sunset Baptist Church and faithfully attended and served in various ministries until health reasons caused her to stop. But even after that, she supported and prayed for her church of which she dearly loved. She had a creative talent of decorating, crafting and making special gifts for her family and friends.
Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Valene Holmes; husband, Huey Harris; brother, Neil Hutchings and sister-in-law Joy Hutchings; brother, Delwin Hutchings whom died at birth.
Charlene is survived by her granddaughter, Naomi Holmes Martinez and husband, Jason Martinez; grandson Caleb Holmes of Lamesa; son-in-law of 43 years, Danny Holmes of Woodward, Oklahoma; sister, LaDonna Hutchings Holloway and husband, Gene of Hope, Arkansas; five great-grandchildren, Evan Martinez, stationed in Japan, Kiaunah Martinez-Jenks and husband, Ian , Aisia Holmes, Briana Holmes, Cassidy Holmes and Colby Holmes, all of Lamesa; three great-great-grandchildren, Mason Morales, Kannon Morales, and Lilah Jenks; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Sunset Baptist Church 1604 N. 9th St., Lamesa, TX. in memory of Huey and Charlene Harris.
