For the second time in less than a month Lamesa firefighters on Friday faced both raging flames and intense afternoon heat while battling a house fire in the southern part of town.
“There were already flames coming through the roof when I got there,” said Eddie Schwartz, the first firefighter to arrive.
The entire west side of the wood-frame house at 606 S. 5th Street also was wrapped in flames.
Wind-fanned flames sweeping through the attic eventually caused the roof to collapse before firefighters could get it under control.
“It got up in the attic and away it went,” Schwartz said Friday evening.
