The girls team from Sands High School at Ackerly placed sixth in the Class 1A State Cross Country Championships held last Saturday in Round Rock.
“This is the first trip a girls team at Sands has made it to state in 21 years,” Coach Dustin Wall said.
Landry Morrow, a freshman on that team, was only one spot away from medaling at the state meet. Morrow placed 11th and set a personal record with a time of 12:42.
Gracie King, a sophomore, also set a personal record with a time of 15:29. King placed 136th in the state competition.
Other team members included sophomore Me-A Gonzalez who was 26th with a time of 12:59; senior Alexis Gonzalez who was 71st with a time of 13:48; freshman Lili Porras who was 78th with a time of 14:02; junior Maria Gonzalez who was 124th with a time of 15:11; and junior Mayra Diaz who was 135th with a time of 15:26.
This year was Me-A Gonzalez’s second straight trip to state, having qualified as an individual last year. She moved up eight places from where she finished last year and completed the course about 13 seconds faster.
Having ran at the state meet two years ago, Alexis Gonzalez finished the course in almost the same time and placed about where she did as a sophomore.
Riley Webb, a sophomore, represented the Sands boys at state after qualifying as an individual at the regional meet. In spite of a broken collarbone suffered playing football only two nights earlier, Webb placed 77th with a time of 18:48.
