With the hospital board finalizing one last policy this past Wednesday, Dr. Eileen Sprys now is seeing patients here as the first-ever physician employed directly by the Dawson County Hospital District.
“She started seeing patients this week,” district Chief Executive Officer Letha Stokes said on Friday.
Dr. Sprys initially will be seeing patients only a few days a week at Medical Arts Clinic, adjacent to Medical Arts Hospital.
Stokes said Dr. Sprys is a family doctor, certified in family medicine.
“She also has a great interest in pre-natal care of the mother and the unborn child,” Stokes said. “Plus, she is interested in women’s health.”
Earning her medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Science Center in 2013, Dr. Sprys completed her residency in family medicine there in 2016 as the chief resident in that department.
The past two years she has supervised residents in hospital medicine at both University Medical Center  and Covenant Hospital in Lubbock. She also cared for patients at the Texas Tech Student Wellness Center, where she supervised residents and mentored fourth-year medical students.
Among other honors. Dr. Sprys recieved the Patient Favorite Award from Texas Tech Student Health Services in 2017.
During a special called meeting on Wednesday, hospital board members approved one final item required for the district to begin directly employing its own physicians.
Other doctors working at Medical Arts Clinic currently and in the past have been employed by Covenant Medical Group, working here under a contract between Covenant and the local district.
