A memorial service for John Hugh Middleton Jr. will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Lamesa with Wayne Smith and Terry Stogner officiating.
Former Lamesa resident John Hugh Middleton Jr., age 74, died on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Lighthouse at Altenheim Hospice in Round Rock, Texas. His body was cremated at Heart of Texas Cremation Burial Services in Austin.
He was born in Lamesa on December 2, 1938.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Elsie Mitchell Middleton and John Hugh Middleton Sr.; and a sister, Jean Wallace Brown.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Middleton of Austin and M’Lee McDonald and one granddaughter of Lubbock; nephews, Ronald Brewer of Midland and Aubrey Wallace of Schulenburg; and a niece, Sherry Bailey of Lamesa.
John Jr. (Hugh Boy), also known by his classmates as “Johnny the Jet,” graduated from Lamesa High School in 1957. He attended the University of Houston on a football scholarship from 1957-1958 and Texas Tech University from 1958-1960.
He returned to Dawson County and farmed for many years where he was a long time member of the First Baptist Church. He was a private pilot and an officer in the Civil Air Patrol, Colonel in the Confederate Air Force, and an avid golfer.
He was an endowed member of the Lamesa Masonic Lodge 909 for over 50 years. There he served as Worshipful Master from 1967-1968 and District Deputy Grand Master, District 80 of the Grand Lodge of Texas. He was also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason for over 50 years.
