TEE TIMES IN AUSTIN KLondike's Ross Raines and Sands' Mattie Grumbles have tee times awaiting them in the UIL Class 1A State Golf Tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course at Austin.

After spending a great deal of time working on their games at Lamesa Municipal Golf Course, both Klondike sophomore Ross Raines and Sands’ junior Mattie Grumbles soon will be teeing off against the state’s best high school golfers.
Raines, one of Region II-IA’s top boys, will be teeing off at  the Class 1A State Golf Tournament this coming  Monday and Tuesday at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin. Grumbles will be teeing off at the 1A girls’ state golf tournament on May 21 and 22 also at Lions’ Municipal in Austin.
Both Raines and Grumbles are fresh off of two of the better rounds of their lives to punch their ticket to state. Grumbles shot an 86 on the second day at regionals to go from being six shots out to winning the Region II-IA golf crown by six shots. After shooting a 91 on the first day at regionals, Raines shot an 81 on the final day to qualify for state a year after coming up two shots short of getting there a year ago.
“Not getting there (state) last year helped really push me,”  Raines said. “One of the biggest differences in my game between
now and last year is that I’m playing with more confidence.”
Grumbles has played her final season of high school golf on a mission.
“One of reasons why I wanted to get back to state so much this year was to redeem myself down there,” Grumbles said.
Last year as a junior, Grumbles shot 101 both days at Lions Municipal.
“I haven’t played that bad since then,” Grumbles recalled.
Having that year’s experience of already playing in the state tourney at Lions Municipal should give Grumbles some kind of edge on her return trip.
