Rusty Miller
Howard Burke “Rusty” Miller of Buchanan Dam, Texas passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017 of natural causes. He was 66 years old.
Rusty was born on September 5, 1950 in Lamesa, Texas to Lavoy Burke Miller and H.B.  Miller. After graduating Valedictorian of his 1969 class, he attended the University of Texas where he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. Rusty practiced law in the Texas Hill Country for many years.
His accomplishments include earning the Eagle Scout rank and induction into the Order of the Arrow, being ranked in the top 3 percent of graduating high school seniors in the United States in 1969, recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program, being selected as a Boy’s State Representative, serving on the Board of the Austin Group for the Elderly in its seminal years and receiving his law degree.
Rusty was not defined by his accomplishments but by his love for, and service to, his friends and family. He would sit with sick friends for days and nights on end, cook for friends, make others love and laugh, work in friend’s and neighbor’s gardens, share his wisdom and teach those who would listen. He also served as a Deacon at the University Baptist Church in Austin.
Rusty was preceded in death by his mother, Lavoy Miller Leach; his father, H.B. Miller; his stepfather, Max Leach; and his sister, Norma Tuttle.
He is survived by two sisters, Ann Wyatt of New Home, Texas and Polly Barringer of Houston, Texas; and brother, David Miller of Lubbock, Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Rusty’s life will be held at the University Baptist Church in Austin on Saturday, March 18, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of donations, and in honor of Rusty, hug someone, smile at a stranger, give someone a flower, cook for a friend, or just be nice for a few minutes.
